Route 26's extension to Liffey Valley has long been talked about but on the 20th January 2019 it finally happened. With the Go Ahead acquisition of former Dublin Bus routes, Dublin Bus were able to put a few more buses on the 66 group of services allowing the 26 to be extended to Liffey Valley and a new 66E route to be introduced. Before Network Direct, the 26 operated to Cherry Orchard Hospital via Kennelsfort Road. As part of the Network Direct changes on the Lucan corridor, the 26 was diverted via Kylemore Road and Ballyfermot to Kennelsfort Road, terminating at Palmerstown Cemetery. But this routing did not last long, with the 26 retaining its Palmerstown Cemetery terminus, but operating via Lucan Road to Kennelsfort Road. The 26 had become a route solely to regulate driver hours on the 66 group, as opposed to having a unique function, the Palmerstown Cemetery terminus being in easy walking distance to the main Lucan Road. I am hopeful this new extension will be successful for Route 26, allowing it to fully serve Kennelsfort Road once more.
